JRAIA Celebrates 60th Anniversary

On June 4, the Japan Refrig-eration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) held its 41st general assembly and a ceremony commemorat-ing its 60th anniversary. In his address, Kiyonobu Toma, chair-man of JRAIA, commented on the situation surrounding the industry. "Since last autumn, our industry has remained in a very severe business situation due to the worldwide economic recession and the appreciation of the yen, among other factors. Also, since this spring, JRAIA has been exposed to increasing criticism mainly due to problems such as refrig-erant leakage and erroneous labeling of product performance. Therefore, it is urgent to take swift and sincere steps."

Chinese Heat Pump Water Heater Market in Fast Lane

Heat pump water heaters are an impor-tant sector of heat pump applications. In Japan, water heaters are widely used, and water heating accounts for about one-third of the home's total energy consumption. In Europe, us-ing outdoor heat pump units to replace boilers and at the same time continu-ing to use the existing floor heating systems has become popular in recent years. During the China Refrigeration 2009 (CR'09) held in April, almost all major Chinese manufacturers exhibited heat pump water heaters, which was far beyond the expectation.
The water heater market in China is about 18.7 million units each year, which is a huge potential market for the heat pump water heaters. Four types of water heaters are mainly used in China at present, namely gas, electric, solar, and heat pump water heaters. According to statistics, in 2008, the market sizes of electric, gas, and solar energy water heaters were RMB 25 bil-lion (about US$ 3.7 billion), 20 billion (about US$ 2.9 billion), and 9.5 billion (about US$ 1.4 billion), respectively.
