October 27 - Sharp Ships 2nd-Generation Thin-Film Solar Cells

On October 1, 2008, Sharp held a ceremony at its Katsuragi Plant (Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture, Japan) to commemorate the plant's first shipment of thin-film solar cell modules that use glass substrates measuring 1,000 x 1,400 mm.
The modules were made at Katsuragi Plant's new production line, which began mass production in October. The glass substrates are 2.7 times larger than previous substrates (560 x 925 mm). The addition of this new line expands annual production capacity at the Katsuragi Plant for thin-film solar cells to 160 MW.
The new line produces second-generation thin-film solar cells boasting a module conversion efficiency of 9%, one of the highest levels in the industry, and a high power output of 128 W.

October 22 - Chillventa Accommodates 800 Exhibitors and 30,000 Visitors

Euphoric mood in Nurernberg: Chillventa 2008, the International Trade Fair for Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heat Pumps, celebrated a brilliant premiere from 15-17 October 2008: Almost 30,000 trade visitors from all over the world were interested in the products and services offered by the 804 exhibitors from 43 countries. "It is absolutely exceptional for a newly announced exhibition to be more or less catapulted from nought to a hundred within slightly less than two years. This is only possible if the industry closely identifies itself with a new exhibition," says a delighted Walter Hufnagel, Member of the Management Board of NurernbergMesse.
The basic tenor of the exhibitors and visitors at Chillventa was a high level of satisfaction: "The industry has presented a self-assured image at the first Chillventa, which was made clear by the size and presentation quality of many stands at the exhibition," says a pleased Gabriele Hannwacker, Exhibition Director of Chillventa. "What many dedicated organizations and individual figures wanted has now been created, namely a high-quality exhibition in their field that reflects their ideas and concepts to a large extent.
Industrial heat pumps, which in Nurernberg were covered for the first time at an exhibition, got off to an outstanding start. "We and our partners will intensively devote our attention to this important energy topic in future," says Walter Hufnagel.
The next Chillventa will take place in Nurernberg from 13-15 October 2010.

October 16 - Sanyo to Increase Monterrey Module Production Capacity

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. announced its plans to increase the production capacity of solar modules at its Mexico Monterrey Factory by nearly 2.5 times the current amount. The increase in production will serve the rapidly rising demand for solar power in the North American market.
The Mexican plant currently has an annual production capacity of 20MW for solar module assembly of Sanyo's proprietary HIT solar panels. The planned increases in production capacity would add up to a total production capacity of 50MW, more than doubling the current capacity of the factory. Operations are expected to start from December, reaching full capacity within this fiscal year(FY) ending March 2009.
Sanyo continues to augment its facilities with the most advanced production equipment and is constructing new facilities for future growth in response to increasing market demand, moving forward to reach the goals set to more than double its annual production capacity from the current level of 260MW to at least 600MW by the close of FY 2010. Sanyo is currently accelerating efforts to increase production of HIT photovoltaic modules to correspond with the needs of the three major markets in the world: Japan, the United States, and Europe. Previously, in addition to the announced production increase at the Mexico Monterrey Plant, Sanyo announced its plans to more than double its solar ingot and wafer production capacity, fundamental components of the HIT solar cell, by building a new plant in Salem, Oregon.
This new plant will be in addition to the existing plant in Carson, California, bringing the total ingot and wafer production capacity in North America to approximately 100MW upon completion and full operation of the Oregon Plant.
