March 29 - Mostra Convegno Expo strengthens Int'l Leadership

The 36th edition of Mostra Convegno Expocomfort - the international exhibition dedicated to civil and industrial plant engineering and Expobagno, the exhibition dedicated to the bathroom world, organized in even years by Reed Exhibitions Italia - have closed confirming their world leadership in the reference sector.
The consolidated international outlook of the event was one of the most distinctive features of MCE, supported by a huge 17% increase in foreign visitor numbers. A growth in terms of exhibiting space of 8% confirmed the positive trend of the show of faith by foreign companies in a leading specialized trade.
Exhibitors were extremely satisfied by the large attendance of major international buyers, who compensate a slight fall in the participation of Italian visitors - a clear sign of the static conditions of our country's national economy.
In this context, over 2,700 exhibiting companies at Mostra Convegno Expocomfort and Expobagno 2008 were enabled to develop contacts with a large number of qualified professionals from all over the world and thus increasing new business opportunities with the main foreign markets.
The key factors behind the success of the 2008 edition included great care and a series of initiatives set up by Reed Exhibitions to promote MCE all around the world, so as to lay the foundations for the 2010 edition, which will take place from 23rd to 27th March, at the Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre in Rho.

March 25 - Melco to Expand Solar Cell Production

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. plans to spend about 7 billion yen to expand its production of solar cells to 220 megawatts per year from its current 150MW by fiscal 2009 on the back of growing global demand, announced the company on March 19.
The company is also considering boosting annual output further to about 500mw by 2012 depending on demand and prices for silicon.
Mitsubishi Electric will be increasing production of crystalline silicon solar cells, which are made by slicing silicon wafers. It plans to boost output capacity at its Nakatsugawa factory in Nagano Prefecture that produces the cells as well as at its Kyoto Prefecture plant that assembles modules by combining cells and other parts.
Global demand for solar cells is growing, mainly in Europe. According to U.S. photovoltaic industry newsletter PV News, the global solar cell market is projected to grow from 2,500MW in 2006 to 10,000MW as early as 2010.
Japanese solar cell producers are taking steps to increase output. Sharp Corp. has plans to construct a new plant in Osaka Prefecture for producing thin-film silicon solar cells, which use less silicon than conventional products.

March 22 - Nippon Oil to Sell Sanyo's Solar Cell Modules

Nippon Oil Corp. plans to start selling Sanyo Electric Co.'s home-use solar panels as early as fiscal 2008 through its nationwide petroleum product sales network, according to a Japanese trade newspaper.
The leading Japanese oil wholesaler plans to use 50 or so of the distributors around Japan to sell 3kw-class solar panels to homes. It targets initial annual sales of about 200 units.
Nippon Oil has already been selling home-use Sanyo fuel cells through its distributors. By expanding its ties with the second-largest Japanese solar cell manufacturer, Nippon Oil aims to nurture solar panels and fuel cells as new operations.
In April, Nippon Oil is expected to bolster its involvement in the fuel cell business, establish and take an 81% stake in a joint venture with Sanyo to manufacture home-use fuel cells.
Demand for oil products has been declining in Japan amid high prices and utilities urging homes to ditch gas and go all-electric.
Nippon Oil is reportedly developing its own low-priced next-generation solar cells with the goal of commercializing them in 2015

March 18 - ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award 2008: Win €10,000

Due to the high level of participation and its success in previous years the
Association of European Refrigeration Component Manufacturers (ASERCOM) is proud to announce once again the sponsorship of the 2008 ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award.
The association would like to recognize an outstanding innovative concept to improve energy efficiency. Energy consumption over the lifetime of refrigeration and air conditioning systems has a greater contribution to greenhouse gases than HFC refrigerant direct emissions. In Europe, for example, such systems account for approximately 14% of the overall power consumption. Hence, efficiency improvement is our industry's primary responsibility in the reduction of emissions.
The €10,000 award is granted for the most innovative energy saving concept or system in refrigeration/air conditioning, including heat pumps. An international panel of technical experts will evaluate the applications. Applications must present a new concept which is technically feasible and economically viable.
Award details are available on the ASERCOM website: www.asercom.org
