November 28 - Sanyo New RAC Series Debuts at IKK

Sanyo Electric has developed the "Shiki Saikan" series of room air conditioners which have high efficiency and yet exhibit high reliability in cold regions under severe climatic conditions, and has just launched them in the European market.
Performance
The "Shiki Saikan" series exhibits a high energy efficiency of COP 5.0 (based on JIS rated cooling operation). This is a top-level efficiency in the European market.
Operation loss in the heating mode has been minimized by adopting the nonreverse cycle defrosting system which is highly rated in cold regions as it eliminates defrosting problems. Since the new RACs have been improved to enable cooling/heating operation even when the outside temperature decreases to -15°C and they can now be used all year round even in cold regions.
Comfort features and interior decor
The "Shiki Saikan" series has been developed with special effort to ensure higher indoor air quality (IAQ) by adopting an air clean apatite filter with a powerful air purifying function and a photo catalytic sterilization lamp, so that users may stay comfortably even in the closed room.
Additionally, the new RACs have been designed to harmonize with the room atmosphere so that they may be used for a long time. Front panel color variations: silver panel included in the carton, plus 6 optional colors (orange, red, black, brown, gold, white). In October, the "Shiki Saikan" series won the '05 Good Design Award in Japan which is presented to industrial products with excellent design, showing its sophisticated design.

November 25 - Clivet HIGHdronic - High Capacity Chiller Range

The high capacity range, up to 1600 kW has always been one of the main target markets for Clivet. Thanks to its long experience Clivet developed special skill for this capacity range. Clivet calls its offer "IGHdronic",in order to highlight the main features of hydronic systems (water based systems) and high capacity and performance.
HIGHdronic offers a wide and complete assortment of choices to perfectly fit all installation needs:

  • Single screw compressors with R- 407C.
  • Double screw compressors with R- 134a.
  • Air and water cooled chillers or split units.
Remote condensers and liquid coolers.
HIGHdronic is the right answer to all requirements in air conditioning systems and technological applications. It provides competitive price solutions with efficiency, high reliability and very low noise emission.
Components are designed and developed by Clivet itself or in close cooperation with the suppliers in order to ensure a perfect balance of activities within the supply chain. This allows cost reductions thanks to economies of scale effects and therefore good market positioning. The compressors are equipped with step-less capacity control as standard. This feature together with Clivet's self-designed electronic control help to perfectly match the plant requirements. The smaller liquid storage tanks needed by Clivet's HIGHdronic enable both initial and operating cost savings.
All units are equipped with modern electronic expansions valves, with an integrated management system. That leads to further energy savings, higher reliability of all components, wider operation limits and easier setup. Old thermostatic expansion valves for such big units often gave concerns to customers, designers, and maintenance people. With the new Clivet HIGHdronic, this is all in the past.

November 19 - Fujitsu General Further Reinforces of R&D Facilities

Fujitsu General has substantially reinforced air conditioner test facility in the head office (KawasakiCity) in order to further enhance the technical development power of air conditioner which is their core business. The company completed an R & D Center in March this year in Fujitsu General (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., one of their main air conditioner factories, to reinforce the development and test facility in China. Through this reinforcement, Fujitsu General is aiming to further enhance technical development power and reliability and expand business in the world market as an integrated air conditioner manufacturer dealing with wide range of products from small room air conditioner for home use ("RAC") to large packaged air conditioner ("PAC") for commercial and building use.
The company, now having 4 bases of air conditioner development in Kawasaki and Hamamatsu in Japan, Shanghai in China and Chonburi in Thailand, will reinforce the development facilities in Kawasaki and Shanghai investing total 900 million yen to cope with the needs of the market promptly.
In the development base in Kawasaki, Fujitsu General renovated and reinforced about 20 facilities including latest test facilities such as the industry's largest class of "environment test room" with test chamber of about 35m2 and top class of "noise test room" and at the same time, installed centralized control and automation by adopting IT-equipped test room in September.
In the Shanghai development base, the company introduced the latest facilities such as "calorie meter", "EMC test room" together with the newly built R & D Center of 2,000m2 which enables them to develop state-of-the-art products.

November 15 - Uniqema celebrates 500 million compressors with Emkarate lubricant

Uniqema, a member of the ICI group, this month celebrates 500 million refrigeration compressors filled with Emkarate refrigeration lubricant. Emkarate RL is a critical component of the refrigeration system that resulted from Uniqema's strategy to help compressor manufacturers worldwide manage a shift from ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) toward non-ozone depleting hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (HFCs). Commercialized in 1993, Emkarate RL ensured a smooth transition to the HFCs used in compressors that run everything from air conditioners to refrigerators.
In domestic refrigeration systems, Emkarate RL can contribute to:

  • Reduction in energy consumption by up to 25%
  • Simplification of compressor system design
  • Reduction in noise levels by up to 50%
  • Significant improvements in environmental quality
Reduction of over 25 million tons of carbon emissions
Where this transition away from CFCs in refrigeration systems has been made, extraordinary benefits have been calculated on a global scale. Beyond the encouraging outlook for the world's ozone layer, Emkarate RL has allowed for a significant reduction in greenhouse gases that may otherwise have contributed to global warming via electricity generation. With 500 million compressor units filled with Emkarate RL lubricant around the world, the equivalent of 25+ million tons of carbon emissions have been avoided.
According to Richard Butler, Industry Sales Manager Lubricants, technology innovations such as the Emkarate RL H Range are playing a very important role in industry - especially given today's rapidly rising energy costs. "The lubricant products we have created for our customers have become something they rely on, not simply in terms of quality, but also to help reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability in areas that go beyond environmental protection," he said.

November 7 - Linde Receives Cooling Industry Award 2005

Linde Kaltetechnik GmbH & Co. KG, a unit of United Technologies Corp., has recently received the prestigious Cooling Industry Award 2005 for its innovative use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant for normal-temperature refrigeration. Linde Kaltetechnik won the award in the category of Environmental Pioneer - Refrigeration.
London-based trade publication, Refrigeration and Air conditioning (RAC) Magazine organizes the annual Cooling Industry Award to recognize the best new processes for environmentally sound cooling solutions in 12 categories.
Linde Kaltetechnik is the first manufacturer in the world to succeed in combining a low-temperature system with a new design of normal-temperature refrigeration pack that works with CO2 in a transcritical cycle.
This revolutionary technology brings benefits to users. When compared to existing systems that use secondary refrigerants, the CO2 unit uses up to 10 percent less energy. Other advantages are lower installation and running costs, a smaller refrigerant charge coupled with higher capacity, and lower cost of the natural refrigerant.
A number of retail stores are already experiencing these benefits and the savings of the new system. Since the first project worldwide was launched at the Swiss COOP Tagipark in late November 2004, Knauf Schmiede in Luxembourg and Aligro in Switzerland have decided to adopt the combination of a low-temperature system and the new normal-temperature system working with CO2.
In the citation on Linde Kaltetechnik's revolutionary development, the judges said: "There is no doubt; this is a major step forward in the application of carbon dioxide in refrigeration. The transcritical cycle has always posed a major challenge, but it appears Linde has overcome the problems and harnessed a technology that has enormous potential."
