July 30 - Ground Source Heat Pump System in Nanjing

The construction of a garden building park, a sample project of Sino-US cooperation on soil-air ground source heat pump, has recently been finished in Nanjing.
The park has 24 buildings and its floor space is about 135,000 square meters.
All the construction was implemented by WFI International, Inc from the United States. The energy needed for the system is supplied by the soil air at a depth of about 70 meters underground..
Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) provide a new and clean way of heating buildings. They make use of renewable energy stored in the ground, providing one of the most energy- efficient ways of heating buildings..
National Development and Reform Commission of China has listed Jiangsu as one of the four pilot provinces of renewable energy utilization.
GSHP is also listed in the "11th Five- Year Plan on Energy Development" of Jiangsu province.
Typically GSHP systems cost more to install than conventional systems; however, they have very low maintenance costs and can be expected to provide reliable and environmentally friendly heating for over 20 years. For example, although it will cost 100,000 yuan and 140,000 yuan respectively to install central air-conditioning system and GSHP system for a 300 square meter building, the investment on the two systems will be equal after only 5 years..
As for the equipment, the polyethylene heat exchange tube the GSHP system uses can be used for about 50 years. The GSHP system also has a simple structure and less components..
Ground source heat is a type of widely distributed energy. The constant temperature layer in the shallow layer of the surface of the earth can be used in most areas of China. The temperature of the constant temperature layer in Nanjing is 17 to 18 degrees Celsius and in North Jiangsu, 15 to 16 degrees Celsius. However, because it needs a fairly huge initial investment, GSHP systems are usually used in residential quarters or large buildings.

July 29 - Honda Develops New 1.8l i-VTEC Engine:

Superior Fuel Economy and Powerful Performance Achieved With Valve Timing Control That Responds to Driving Conditions Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recently announced that it has developed a new 1.8l i-VTEC engine to be introduced this fall in the new Civic that achieves both more powerful performance and improved fuel economy. The engine employs an intelligent VTEC system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during startup and acceleration to achieve powerful, torquey performance, then delays intake valve closure timing during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy. Use of the valve timing control system results in off-the-line acceleration performance equivalent to a 2.0-liter engine, fuel economy approximately 6% better than the current 1.7-liter Civic engine, making it one of the world's most efficient 1.8-liter engine designs. During cruising, the new engine achieves particularly high fuel economy, on a par with that of a 1.5-liter engine.
1.8l i-VTEC enginecut-away model.
Under low-load conditions on conventional engine, the throttle valve is normally partly closed to control the intake volume of the fuel-air mixture. During this time, pumping losses are incurred due to intake resistance, and this is one factor that leads to reduced engine efficiency. With the i-VTEC engine, however, intake valve closure timing is delayed to control the intake volume of the air-fuel mixture, allowing the throttle valve to remain wide open even under low-load conditions for a major reduction in pumping losses of up to 16%. Combined with comprehensive friction-reducing measures, this results in a significant increase in fuel efficiency for the engine itself.

July 28 - Dalian Sanyo Completes GHP Production Line

A production line of gas-engine heat pump (GHP) with a production capability of 10,000 units a year has been completed last May at Dalian Sanyo Refrigeration Co., Ltd (DSR).
This is the first large scale GHP production line that has ever been constructed in China. As a result, Dalian turned into the largest GHP manufacturing base in China.br> A testing production line of GHPs was completed at DSR in September 2003 and China's first GHP of 20 hp using R407C refrigerant was produced there. Its successful running marks the beginning of the independent assembling of GHPs by DSR. With the implementation of the "West-East Natural Gas Transmission Project" in China, GHPs are encouraged by many local governments. In order to satisfy the requirement of GHP, DSR began to construct the current GHP production line in July, 2004.
DSR is the first Company in China that produces central ACs using clean energy.
The GHPs use nature gas or liquefied petroleum as the energy source to realize cooling and heating, which can lighten the gas and electric power disequilibrium caused by seasons. It has some other advantages such as high-efficiency and low running cost as well. It will also help to diminish the power shortage and protect the environment, which are some of the key issues that need to be solved in China at present. It is also the development trend of residential ACs.
The production line covers an area of 5,000 square meters and advanced technologies such as rotary working position and computer-controlled tracking and testing systems are used.
Although its products are currently sold in the domestic market, they will also be exported to Europe, America, and South East Asia in the future. With the completion of the production line, DSR becomes the largest manufacturing base of Sanyo outside Japan.

July 9 - Toshiba Carrier Exports Heat Pump Water Heaters to Europe

Toshiba Carrier began exporting heat pump water heaters using R410A refrigerant to heat pump water heater makers in Northern Europe. The company aims to supply several thousand units per year.
Toshiba Carrier intends to expand heat pump water heater sales as a new line of business based on their energy saving technologies (high-efficiency inverter & compressor technologies) which have been brought about through room air conditioner (RAC) and packaged air conditioner (PAC) development.
While endeavoring to expand the domestic heat pump water business, the company also aims to supply highly energy- efficient heat pump water heaters to overseas markets.
As exemplified by the fact that the company's commercial heat pump water heater "Hot Power Eco BIG" received the Energy Saving Grand Prix on the occasion of the 15th Energy Saving Grand Prix Conferment Ceremony in 2004, Toshiba Carrier's energy-saving technologies are highly rated in Japan.
In the domestic market, the ECO CUTE units - heat pump water heaters using natural refrigerant (CO2) - are treated as an object of subsidy, thus occupying a significant market share.
However, Toshiba Carrier recognizes that a refrigeration cycle technology using R410A refrigerant has already been established and is more reliable. The company therefore predicts that heat pump water heating systems using R410A will also diffuse in overseas markets thanks to their high energy-saving performance, and overseas heat pump water heater markets will show expansion comparable to the Japanese market.

July 7 - Daikin Sets up Office in Moscow

On May 1, Daikin Industries opened its "Moscow Office" as an office of Daikin Europe in Moscow City, Russia.
With the current opening of the Moscow office, Daikin intends to shift the conventional sales system mainly undertaken by sales agents to a system led by the company. Based on their own marketing activities, the company will carry out market research and thereby extend reinforced sales support to their agents and retailers. Also, by seeking new agents and retailers, the company aims to expand their AC market in Russia.
In terms of AC market size, Russia, together with Germany and Greece, belongs to the 5th largest group in Europe, following Italy, Spain, France and the UK, according to Daikin's estimation.
The Russian market is growing steadily despite the cool summer in 2003 and 2004. Its residential RAC market, in particular, has become the 4th largest one in Europe due to the fact that Russia has a hot summer comparable to that in Japan.
Therefore, it is expected to grow sizably from now on.
The Russian market of commercial ACs (VRV) in which Daikin has a strong foothold is also predicted to expand sizably, since hotels, offices, stores and other commercial facilities are increasing rapidly in big cities, and big urban development projects are also underway.
The Russian AC market in 2004 was at \42 billion, having nearly doubled from 2000, and is predicted to expand to some \60 billion or more in 2007. Daikin's sales in the air conditioning business is estimated to reach about \3.6 billion in 2004. While the company is enjoying a favorable increase in sales of commercial ACs (VRV) , it is subordinate to the Korean manufacturers in those of residential RACs whose market is large. So, with the opening of the Moscow office as an opportunity, the company will reinforce sales supporting activities for their agents and retailers, and thereby aim at attaining about \8 billion of sales in 2007 by developing business operations.
