ISH North America, the consolidated trade show and seminar program for the Kitchen and Bath, Plumbing, PVF, Heating and Air Conditioning will take place October 14-16 at the brand-new Boston Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
To showcase the talents of the nation's top plumbing apprentices, the PHCC is again sponsoring the PHCC International Plumbing Apprentice Contest, Oct. 14 and 15 as part of the ISH North America trade show. Apprentices will rough in a basic bathroom unit during the contest, as judges critique their skills. State and local PHCC associations hold contests each year vying for the opportunity to compete in the international contest. "This contest really attracts the cream of the crop," said PHCC Executive Vice President Ike Casey. "It is an honor for anyone to compete in it, and it is certainly enjoyable for the trade show crowd to see these apprentices in action."
Last year, the contest was expanded to include international participants for the first time. The international participation is expected to be stronger this year. "For our two Canadian plumbing apprentices, the 2003 contest provided an excellent opportunity to compete in preparation for further competitions, such as the World Skills competition," said Hans Tiedemann of MCA Alberta (Canada).
As part of its commitment to the future industry workforce, PHCC also offers an apprentice program throughout the country. "Workforce development is a top priority for PHCC," Casey said. "Our apprentice program is designed to train students in all relevant areas so that they are fully prepared in the field."

August 27 - Carrier Guarantees Chillers Utilizing HFC-134a

According to Carrier Corporation, USA, ten years ago the company designed and introduced the Evergreen™ family of centrifugal chillers - a complete line of chillers with high efficiency non-ozone depleting refrigerant. At the Engineering Green Building Conference, Carrier announced that it would enhance its commitment to the environment by providing a 0.1% leak-proof warranty on its Evergreen family of chillers that are shipped after October 1, 2004.
Carrier's Evergreen Chillers with non-ozone depleting HFC-134a have the lowest published leak rate in the industry due to their hermetic motor design and ASME construction. The chillers also provide industry-leading part-load efficiency, which is where chillers operate 99% of their life, says the company.
Under the new warranty Carrier will provide coverage against refrigerant leaks for the first five years of ownership. For customers that maintain a service agreement with Carrier Commercial Service, Carrier will extend the warranty for the life of the chiller.

August 25 - Japanese Residential Dehumidifier Market

The dehumidifier sales race for fiscal year 2004 (Apr. '04 ~ Mar. '05) made a good start. Shipments were favorable in May.
Although air conditioner (AC) sales had a hard time last summer due to the unseasonable weather, dehumidifiers were rather favored by it, and they sold so well in July that those in the hands of distributors were sold out. With this experience, the dealers hastened to secure the products at an earlier stage.
In fact, the favorable sales in May were due to the long rain with high humidity. There was reportedly even a week when sales nearly doubled those attained in the same week last year.
Unclear Outlook
Concerning this year's dehumidifier market, there is, on one hand, a bullish outlook that "more sales than in the previous year may be attained." That is, it is predicted that total sales may top 700,000 units. On the other hand, however, there is a prudent outlook that dehumidifiers may not sell so well as expected.
Many early predictions foretold that sales in fiscal year 2004 will drop below the previous year. This reflects the recognition that 700,000 units achieved in the previous year was too good. However, since the market once reached a size close to one million units, it is also possible to expect that the market will steadily expand again towards the one million units.
The prevalence of residential dehumidifiers is coming near 20%. Like snowy countries, there are places where dehumidifiers become daily necessities for preventing condensation in winter. In highly airtight and insulated condominiums or detached residences, since it is important to take countermeasures against condensation of moisture, there seem to be considerable potential needs.
With 956,000 units in 1999 as a peak, yearly dehumidifier sales continued to drop due to the weather and other factors.
In 2003, however, yearly sales recovered up to 700,000 units due to the long rainy season. After showing a sharp drop in 2000 and 2001, the market seemed to have stabilized at around 500,000 ~ 600,000 units. However, since it returned to 700,000 units in 2003, there is a prediction that the market again reach 700,000 units in 2004.

Reinforcing product capabilities
Unlike air conditioners, dehumidifiers are portable so that they are suitable for 'spot' dehumidification in a dressing room, closet, entrance hall, etc. They are also often used for laundry drying. Thus, they are a convenient unit. In the segment of small types, a lightweight and compact desiccant system is enjoying increasing sales. The makers are endeavoring to reinforce the product capabilities.

August 23 - Shanghai Adopts EER Label

The AC energy conservation access system" first experimented in Shanghai has turned to color. The first batch of energy efficiency "green card" for ACs in our country made under the supervision of the Shanghai Commercial and Industrial Association of Household AC Appliances was launched officially on June 7. All products entering the Shanghai AC market in the future must hold this card. Otherwise, they will be kept out of the Shanghai market. All those which fail to meet the energy efficiency standard will be rejected.
The official name of the "green card" is "AC EER Label," which is a rectangular form 80~120 mm in size. Crossing the green master waist is a yellow warning zone indicating that only those which meet the EER value requirement can enter the market. Also printed on the yellow warning zone is the manufacturer's commitment to credit: "This product has been strictly inspected in accordance with the national standard."
In the past, identification labels attached to ACs produced by enterprises mostly contained technical terms and figures, by which ordinary consumers hardly know if they save energy and have an energy-savings effect. Therefore, on the green card, contents of the national standard "GB12021.3-2000" are listed, including the limited values of energy efficiency and evaluating values of energy conservation for room air conditioners promulgated by the State in 2000. Therefore, whether for cooling-only or heat pump types, the national energy efficiency standard is very clear at a glance.
The Association also addressed the fact that the green card for energy-saving ACs launched today is still a phased measure.
After October 1 this year, the government will further raise the energy efficiency threshold and promulgate the stricter standard "The limited values of energy efficiency and evaluating values of energy conservation for household air conditioners." At that time, the new green card attached with listed contents of the new standards will be issued simultaneously.

August 19 - CO2 H/P Water Heater Market Heats Up

CO2 heat pump water heater "ECO CUTE" has been a quantum leap in sales. The invitation of applications for the subsidy system in 2004 started May 26 and closed May 30, only 6 days after the start, as the scheduled amount was reached. The 2nd round will start from October 1. Total demand for fiscal year 2004 (Apr. '04 ~ Mar. '05) is expected to reach 110,000 units, up 40% over the previous year.
The Heat Pump & Thermal Storage Technology Center of Japan (HPTCJ) decided to make a strict drawing by accepting application forms whose arrival was confirmed by May 31 including those reached the HPTCJ's mailbox on May 29 and 30.
The "ECO CUTE" market is heating up, reflecting the accelerating diffusion of all-electric homes, growing awareness of environmental protection, etc. It was sized at 80,000 units or less in fiscal 2003, up 110% over the previous year, and there are makers predicting that shipments in fiscal 2004 will expand to 110,000 units, up 40%.
Growing environmental awareness
With the end of the 1st round of invitations of subsidy applications, the makers expect that the "ECO CUTE" will be accepted by "users having high environmental awareness who are willing to buy the "ECO CUTE" even without a subsidy." Further, the makers intend to promote the specifying activities for design offices, building contractor's offices, housing equipment shops, etc., by expecting that the "ECO CUTE" installed as part of equipment of newly constructed residences will be sold even without a subsidy.
Although the "ECO CUTE" is expensive, its running cost becomes only about 1/5 that of a gas water heater by utilizing the late-night electric power charge system). It is also backed up by the subsidy system. These favorable factors will put spurs to the demand for expansion.

August 17 - Growing Residential Photovoltaic Generation Systems - Up 38% in 2003

Demand for residential photovoltaic generation systems totaled 52,863 cases in 2003, up 38.2% over the previous year (based on the number of applications for residential photovoltaic generation subsidy).
It is also expected to show similar growth in 2004, reaching some 70,000 cases.
Japan's demand for residential photovoltaic generation systems continued to expand from 20,877 cases in 2000, up 31.5%, to 25,151 cases in 2001, up 20.5%, and 38,262 cases, up 52.1% in 2002.
The expansion is greatly attributable to the government's subsidy system to residential photovoltaic generation systems (residential photovoltaic generation system introduction promotional project undertaken by the New Energy Foundation (NEF) which has continued to be budgeted from 2000 to 2002.)
System prices more than halved in 7 ~ 8 years
Prices of residential photovoltaic generation systems have been more than halved for the last 7 ~ 8 years, thanks to the makers' efforts at mainly reducing the cost of crystalline silicon solar cells. For the last few years, the price decreases have been at a standstill reflecting the soaring silicon and material prices, the makers have tried to lower the cost by prompting the development of technologies and deriving the effect of mass production by expanded penetration.
Further, the makers expect to reduce the total cost including that of installation by integrating the solar cells with building members such as roof and wall materials.
Aims 300,000 per 1 kW for the system cost
From now on, the residential photo voltaic generation system makers will be required to establish independent management not relying upon a government subsidy. The industry is going to reduce the system cost per 1 kW to 300,000 by 2010.

August 1 - Matsushita Develops New Air Filter Capable of Inactivating SARS Virus

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) announced July 9, 2004 that its environment-related subsidiary, Matsushita Ecology Systems Co., Ltd., has developed a revolutionary air filter. The new filter neutralizes or inactivates a variety of airborne allergens and viruses including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus. Panasonic will incorporate the filter into air treatment equipment including air purifiers and humidifiers to create clean and healthy indoor environments.
The air filter features a new anti-allergen material called Super Alleru-Buster and a polyphenol-based anti-virus agent. Super Alleru-Buster is a phenol polymer-based anti-allergen material for air filters. Compared to its predecessor, the Alleru-Buster, the new fortified material can capture and inactivate more airborne particulates such as animal dander, mold spores, dust mites and pollens when used in air filters. This is the first filter in the world that has a demonstrated effectiveness in neutralizing animal dander or mold spores.
Panasonic has also developed new technologies to allow the Super Alleru-Buster to be blended and coated onto the filter substrate together with antibacterial and antivirus agents including catechin, a polyphenol compound found in green tea. Panasonic developed air filters using catechin jointly with Mitsui Norin Co., Ltd. and has used them in its air purifiers. They are now proven highly effective in inactivating the SARS virus. No other air filters have ever exhibited anti-SARS activity.
The new air filter is also effective in conserving energy as it is designed to ensure good airflow. The new technologies involved in developing the air filter will be presented at the Society for Antibacterial and Antifungal Agents conference in Fukui, Japan, in October 2004. Panasonic has filed five Japanese patents on this product.
