December 22 - ASHRAE Explores Pros and Cons of Residential Ventilation

Depending on whom you ask, residential ventilation improves comfort, reduces comfort, increases exposure to contaminants, reduces exposure to contaminants, saves energy, costs energy, controls moisture and causes moisture problems.
"Residential ventilation has been, and continues to be, a controversial issue," Dianne Griffiths, Steven Winter Associates Inc., Norwalk, Conn., said. "Is it really necessary? Yes. Can it cause more harm than good? Yes, if not done properly."
Residential ventilation with an emphasis on climate-specific needs and solutions will be addressed in a seminar at the ASHRAE 2004 Winter Meeting technical program. The meeting will be held Jan. 24-28, Anaheim, Calif, USA.
The Hows and Whys of Residential Ventilation will take place from 8-10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25. It is sponsored by ASHRAE technical committee 5.12, Ventilation Requirements and Infiltration.
The seminar will feature an introduction to ventilation through the perspective of ASHRAE Standard 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings; a comparison of Standard 62.2 and Canadian code requirements; benefits and limitations posed by climate-specific ventilation systems and strategies for taking advantage of regional characteristics; and discussion on the impacts of moisture and possible mitigation.

December 18 - Fujitsu General and Little Swan Tie up for Motors

Fujitsu General, tying up with Jiangsu Little Swan Group, Wuxi City, a Chinese major home appliance maker, has decided to establish F.G.L.S. Electric Co., Ltd. (capitalized at US$6.3 million), a subsidiary for producing/selling high-performance DC motors, in December on 50-50 capital investment basis.
The new subsidiary becomes China's first company for producing/ selling high-performance DC motors used in energy-saving ACs such as inverter ACs. It will be put to full-scale operation from April 2004. About \5,000 million sales are planned to be attained by the new subsidiary in the starting year. While supplying these motors to Fujitsu's main AC factory in Shanghai, the new subsidiary will also sell them to other companies in China and other countries respectively through the sales channels of Little Swan Group and Fujitsu General.
When the new subsidiary is established, the global 3-center system for further expansion of motor business will be established. As a result, a system for supplying cost-competitive products at the best place for production will be completed. The company thereby intends to strengthen/expand the motor business, while helping expand the AC business.
Little Swan Group also aims to expand its motor business based on Fujitsu General's outstanding technological capabilities.
The new company is established by Jiangsu Little Swan Group (51% of whose capital was invested by Jiangsu Little Swan Sanjiang Electric Co., Ltd., China's top washing machine maker belonging to Wuxi Little Swan Group) and Fujitsu General on 50-50 capital investment basis.

December 16 - MHI Develops "Allergen Clear Filter"

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), jointly with Takara Bio Co., has developed "Allergen Clear Filter" which can decompose allergen for the first time in the world as for the enzyme-applied model. Releasing new RACs with the filter from January 2004, MHI plans to load the filter on other ACs to make the filter become their core technology for indoor air quality (IAQ).
The salient feature of "Allergen Clear Filter" lies in that "It decomposes harmful substances using enzyme, thereby differentiating itself from competitive filters. The scope of effectively decomposed substances has expanded due to allergen decomposition, while the new filter is highly durable under a wide range of conditions from high temperature/ high humidity to low temperature/ low humidity. These are also noticeable features." says Mr. M. Fujiwara, Deputy General Manager, Technical Headquarters of MHI.
Last year, the company developed "Enzyme-applied Powerful Degerming Filter" whose natural enzyme hydrolytically decomposes bacteria or mold caught by the filter, having adopted in the company's RACs, commercial ACs and air purifiers since 2002.
As an advanced enzyme-applied type, the new filter can decompose and deactivate not only bacteria and mold but also allergenic substances such as ticks and pollen. Among many filter technologies, MHI claims, MHI Allergen Clear Filter is the first filter that deactivates even allergens.
MHI plans to adopt the new filter technology in RACs, packaged ACs, air purifiers, car ACs, etc. to be released from January 2004.
Since the filter is still somewhat costly, the company does not plan to adopt it in humidifiers or air purifiers. It is the mixture of enzyme with urea that has made decomposition of allergen possible. Allergen is very difficult to decompose since it is chemically stable due to solid bonding. However, when urea is mixed into enzyme, urea acts as denaturant decomposing the structure of higher order of allergen and then enzyme decomposes the primary structure, thus making effective deactivation possible.
Effects verified at public institutions MHI's own filter technology has realized enzymatic reactions to allergen on the filter for the first time in the world. Its effects upon tick allergen, Japanese cedar allergen, cat allergen, viruses (such as influenza virus), bacteria, mold, etc. have been verified by tests at public institutions.
Allergen deactivating reactions, for example, were verified by joint research with National Sagamihara Hospital.

December 1 - Samsung DVM Arouses Keen Interest at Asercom

During the Asercom seminar held in Hanover on Oct 7 2003, Samsung Electronics Korea presented a paper titled "Better Controls To Improve Air-conditioning System Efficiency". This technical paper looked at an example of a 10HP Samsung DVM air-conditioning system that uses the Copeland Digital Scrolla, to explain the various nuances of control technology. There are 5 areas on which this paper was focused - Copeland Digital Scroll compressor, electronic expansion valve control, outdoor fan motor control, passive components and electronic system control.
The key to the efficiency of the DVM system is the Copeland Digital Scroll compressor. The Digital Scroll has excellent full load and part load efficiencies and does not have any power losses that are typically associated with conversion from AC current to DC current and back. The Digital Scroll operates in 2 states of "loading" and "unloading". During the loaded state, the compressor delivers full load capacity and works like a standard scroll compressor. During the unloaded state, the 2 scroll elements separate by 1 mm and there is no compression and so the capacity output and refrigerant mass flow is "zero". An example of a 20 seconds cycle time was taken to show how a linear capacity from 10% to 100% could be achieved. In a cycle time of 20 seconds, if the scrolls are loaded for 10 seconds and unloaded for 10 seconds, the time-averaged capacity is 50%. By changing the loaded and unloaded time, any capacity can be achieved from 10% to 100%. The other advantages of the Digital Scroll technology are - better temperature and humidity control, easy oil return (no need for oil separator or complicated oil return cycle), no electromagnetic interference and simplified system architecture.
